This study revisits the history of temperance in Baltimore in order to present an inclusive and revealing narrative analyzing the work of Catholic men and women, free blacks, and the city’s few Jews alongside the more familiar story of white Protestant anti-alcohol activists. Their stories illustrate the ways in which people of different faiths, social classes, and ethnic backgrounds defined “temperance” at different times, and crafted a variety of approaches to alcohol restriction, regulation, or prohibition. My work exposes the ways in which antebellum Protestant and Catholic temperance strategies overlapped, particularly by demonstrating how the Washingtonians both influenced and were influenced by the work of the Irish Catholic temperance reformer, Father Theobald Mathew. But it shows how, in the end, denominational and ethnic differences dashed any real chances for Catholic-Protestant cooperation. And it chronicles how Protestant reformers’ turn toward strict regulation and, in the aftermath of a failed “Maine Law” campaign, prohibition, marginalized Catholic temperance reformers. Finally, it answers the question of what happened to this social reform through the Civil War years, on the home front and in the military, by tracing temperance activism during the war and the post-war years, ending up at the Panic of 1873 and the rise of a national prohibition movement. Throughout, it covers the work of both male and female reformers, and the shifting concerns that shaped male and female leadership.;Two points of entry help define the topic: temperance organizations and their leaders. The cascading concrete and steel killed 14 people and injured 34 others. The construction of the Skyline Plaza began in the early 1970s. The site was just south of Bailey’s Crossroads in Northern Virginia, on the site of the “Washington-Virginia Airport.” It sat on a prime piece of real estate that bordered both Seminary Road and Route 7. Skyline Center, location of Skyline Plaza, was going to be one of the largest complexes in Northern Virginia at the time. The building that collapsed was to have contained 468 condominium apartments. The building was set to open in August 1973. All condominium apartments had been sold and ranged in price from $23,000 to $62,000 according to the sales office. Plaza was the second major fatal accident involving Smith projects within five years. In June, 1968, two floors caved in at a Crystal City office building, killing three men and injuring 29 others. Arlington County investigated the incident and blamed the accident on insufficient wooden shoring to hold up concrete being poured to form the floor above it. Martin Lowton, 56, of Alexandria, Virginia, was inside the Skyline Plaza Tower 1 when it collapsed in 1973. He huddled under a fourth-floor staircase as concrete fell around him. Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was an American writer noted for his many novels. He was born at Bagni di Lucca, Italy. In 1879 he went to India, where he studied Sanskrit and edited the Allahabad Indian Herald. Returning to America he continued to study Sanskrit at Harvard University for a year, contributed to various periodicals, and in 1882 produced his first novel, Mr Isaacs. This book had an immediate success, and its author’s promise was confirmed by the publication of Doctor Claudius: A True Story (1883). After a brief residence in New York and Boston, in 1883 he returned to Italy, where he made his permanent home. He also published the historical works, Ave Roma Immortalis (1898), Rulers of the South (1900) renamed Sicily, Calabria and Malta in 1904, and Gleanings from Venetian History (1905). The Saracinesca series is perhaps known to be his best work, with the third in the series, Don Orsino, set against the background of a real estate bubble, told with effective concision. A fourth book in the series, Corleone, was the first major treatment of the Mafia in literature.
